AQUARIAN WEEKLY WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT: CAPTIVATED IN TRANSLATION
By Jessica Gatdula
Indie-folk rocker Alina Simone all about describing how people bring opportunity into each other’s lives and how epiphanies can occur in the most common places. The Ukraine-born singer / songwriter fixed this style in Placelessness, her debut full-length album released last year. Everyone Is Crying Out To Me, Beware is her latest effort and will hit the shelves on Aug.5. She will be celebrating its release by performing songs from the album on Friday, Aug 8 at Union Hall in Brooklyn. Part of Simone’s charm is her ability in balancing out her strong vocals with delicate, stripped down lyrics. Her music is also greatly influenced by her
own idols, such as punk poet and Russian music legend Yanka Dyagileva, whose hauntingly memorable vocals have been compared to Simone’s. After spending some time in Novosibirsk, the Siberian city where Dyagileva was born and died, Simone started recording on Everyone Is Crying Out To Me, Beware. It is her second full-length album, which will be released under the label 54o40 or Fight!, and is composed entirely of Dyagileva cover songs sung in Russian. Simone’s purpose in the album is to bring to life Dyagileva’s music to a new audience by adding her own spin of instruments, such as the bajo sexto and the viola.
