Simone’s great new sophomore album Everyone Is Crying Out to Me, Beware finds her covering nine songs by Yanka Dyagileva, who has been described as the Soviet Nick Drake. Ukraine-born, Massachussetts-bred Simone sings Dyagileva’s songs entirely in Russian, and the irreverant folk tunes have a Soviet scent about them. But in spirit and, more or less, in sound, the record is much like her own critically acclaimed work.
