Ukranian-born songwriter Simone tonight at Lucas,

Recommended tonight (Wed.) is Ukrainian-born Alina Simone, playing at the Lucas School House. Raised in Massachusetts, Simone rediscovered her roots in recent years and has traveled extensively to Russia to perform and work for charities. At the Lucas, she’ll be singing songs in Russian off her recent album, “Everyone is Crying Out to Me, Beware.” The album is a tribute to Siberian punk/folk singer Yanka Dyagileva, who drowned under mysterious circumstances in 1991.

“She was doing indie rock and was one of the most important rock musicians in Russia,” said Simone. “Music was basically illegal, so she had to self-publish her books and tapes and circulate them underground. She traveled around by train and performed at informal venues. She was an iconic figure and well-respected within the rock scene.
